Combining Architecture, Design and arts & crafts
Do to the work in FACTORIA interdisciplinary design and architectural studio, we have specialized in custom, handmade pieces that complement our primary design practice. A long the years, the work in FACTORIA, has been known as a factory of making ideas materialized, regardless its dimension in size. Within every projects, we have used metal and wood shops to create jaw-dropping custom doors, cabinets, handles, lamps and furniture among other objects. We have also, invited, other studio shops to collaborate with us, creating a way of making things, connecting others, into a large community lab for experimentation and design process exchange. We have learned sophisticated forms through an organic process that results in an intuitive piece shaped significantly during prototyping, or more technical approach through environmental consciousness. However, the work is imbued with the spirit of its makers and talented craftsmen, since they learned how to design furniture and objects by building them. None of which would be possible without the freedom, experimentation, and material empathy that the shops and makers nourish our design studio and our admiration for natural forms and species. Maybe we are not distant to that old Italian adage that the architect should be able to design everything from the spoon to the city, and we are fascinated with the idea of recycling of generating development for smaller communities as well.

“We are a company dedicated to the creation and production of sustainableluxury furniture “sustainable handmade” designed by architect Susana Herrera & Factoria Design winner of several design awards and cited in international publications.
In our production of furniture we work with a French navigateur and great craftsmen, together we have developed a system of ancient boat construction techniques of laminated wood, as used in classically crafted exclusive yachts and sailing boats. Our craftsmen are Chilean and French artisans with over 30 years’ experience in production of boats, furniture and sculptures that have been exported to different countries for a long time. We believe in developing value-added products, connecting innate skills of traditional artisans with the creative potential of the design discipline.
For me, every unique piece of wood is an art potencial. I love combining architecture, design and arts & crafts. I believe in a collaborative way of creating and making things, connecting others, into a large community lab for experimentation and design process exchange. I want to be involved in creating culture and developing an appreciation for beauty and fine craftsmanship not just for us, but specially for our community.
Our aims are to create luxury and bespoke handmade products and contribute to sustainability.
We have profound respect in solid material, not just the beauty of it, but also it lasting in time, as a piece of art. Even with today’s confluence of mass produced, easily accessible design objects and product lines, there is a craving to get back to basics, and a thriving market for artisans who have dedicated themselves to perfecting centuries’ old techniques. A new consciousness, in pace with the growing enthusiasm for sustainability, has created a new economy in which supporting domestic and local artists and products matters more than ever.
